Kongo Dan Taisen

One of the most unique events in sport aikido is the kongo dan taisen which consists of a team of seven (7) players who compete in five (5) events. Originally, the kongo dan taisen events included women’s tanto tai sabaki and toshu randori. In 2017, the WSAF executive committee chose to make the event more inclusive by replacing women’s tanto tai sabaki with women’s tanto randori. They also eliminated toshu randori. In its place is a kyu tai sabaki event. In the 2019 World Championships, kongo dan taisen will consist of:

  1. Goshin no Kata – Suwari Waza/Hanza Handachi (2 players, 8 techniques)
  2. Goshin no Kata – Tachi Waza (2 players, 8 techniques)
  3. Kyu Tanto Tai Sabaki (1 player from each team, 2 90 second rounds)
  4. Women’s Tanto Randori (1 player from each team, 2 90 second rounds)
  5. Men’s Tanto Randori (1 player from each team, 2 90 second rounds)
